For some peculiar reason, whenever I address a health issue and my male friends are present, the discussion is quickly redirected to another subject as they try to avoid the discussion. I recently encountered the same phenomenon and one of my friends responded that men are feeling guilty of making mistakes when it comes to their health. From forgetting to eat their daily fruit and veggies indulging in a hamburger of French fries, to scheduling an appointment with the doctor only when the symptoms they have been experiencing for weeks intensify, men feel guilty for not taking care of their health and try to avoid any type of discussion that reminds them of that fact.

If you are familiar with the old story that men do not need to ask for street advice, as they can always find their way, they also generally tend not to seek out help when it comes to their health as they are always capable of surpassing the problem they have been facing and heal themselves. In fact, statistics reveal that women worry more about their health status than men do, and they take more preventative measures to protect it. After conducting my own focus group with some of my male friends, I discovered that this is totally true. Most of them avoid going for their regular check-ups, especially younger men, and decide to pay a visit to the doctor’s office only when something is broken, usually because a woman is present and insists that this is serious and should not be left to chance. Then it is only logical that men have, on average, a shorter life expectancy than women by six years.

But although this can be partly explained due to societal standards that portray men to be strong and touch, this potentially life-threatening health negligence cannot be justified. Enduring pain and being able to overcome any type of problem they face does not seem as an adequate explanation for this type of problematic behavior. The truth is that men tend to view doctor’s visits as uncomfortable and involving potentially painful procedures and in general men are not capable of handling or enduring pain. While women are biologically capable of handling the pains of a pregnancy they are also more open to discuss health issues and educated themselves regarding the threats associated with their health.

If one only considers the fact that the magazine’s and website’s focus is not on men’s health compared to the women’s health issues discussed, it is only logical to conclude that men’s health does not seem to be a priority either for men or for society. It is not that men do not get sick or are not experiencing signs of weakness from time to time; it is rather that their social role does not permit them to look or express that weakness.

No matter how much of a cliché it may sound, the maxim that prevention is better than cure applies – especially when it comes to men’s health. The reason why this is so is because when you look at the top 10 leading causes of deaths in males in the United States, you would see that they are actually perfectly preventable.

To give you an idea, here is a quick list of the top 10 leading causes of deaths in males in the United States for 2004, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

1. Heart disease, 27.2% of total deaths

2. Cancer, 24.3% of total deaths

3. Unintentional injuries, 6.1% of total deaths

4. Stroke, 5% of total deaths

5. Chronic lower respiratory diseases, 5% of total deaths

6. Diabetes, 3% of total deaths

7. Influenza and pneumonia, 2.3% of total deaths

8. Suicide, 2.2% of total deaths

9. Kidney disease, 1.7% of total deaths

10. Alzheimer’s disease, 1.6% of total deaths

Heart disease, stroke, respiratory diseases and kidney disease are actually preventable illnesses – if only men will learn how to live a healthier lifestyle in the first place.

So if you don’t want to be part of these statistics, what exactly can you do to prevent them? What are the ways that men can avoid the top 10 threats in their health from occurring? Read on to find out.

Enumerating the Top 10 Threats to Men’s Health & How They Can be Prevented

Still according to the CDC, based from the top 10 leading causes of death in males in the United States, only 80% can be attributed to one of only ten causes. What this specifically means is all that men need to do is avoid the risks associated with these diseases – and in turn, they can significantly improve their health and extend their lives.

Now, here are the top ten health threats to their health that men face on a regular basis, as well as some tips on exactly how they can be prevented:

1. Heart Disease

Even from the CDC’s 2003 statistics, heart disease is the number one killer of American men. From 2003 to 2004, it was responsible for causing about 28% of the deaths – and the sad thing about it is that this is a completely preventable disease.

In order to avoid heart disease, you should try to maintain a healthy weight. Having a diet which is rich in fruits, vegetables, fiber and avoiding fatty foods is also a great way to keep heart disease at bay.

Sometimes, there are underlying health conditions related to heart disease. If you have diabetes, for example, you should keep your blood sugar under control. Also, have your body cholesterol and blood pressure tested – and always follow your doctor’s advice.

2. Cancer

The big ‘C’ is a close second to heart disease as the leading causes of death in male Americans.

The types of cancers which cause death include lung cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer.

Perhaps the most preventable type of cancer among these three is lung cancer. As long as you steer clear of smoking, there is a lesser chance that you will get it.

As for prostate and colon cancer, the best way to fight against cancers is by having regular checkups or preventive health screenings.

3. Unintentional Injuries

The instances when unintentional injuries which lead to death occur include vehicular accidents, poisoning, falls, drowning and workplace accidents.

Although it is true that accidents do happen, there is such a thing as being too careless.

In order to minimize the possibilities of your suffering from injuries, it is best to take preventive measures and take good care of yourself.

This is especially true when driving – which you should not do when sleepy, drunk or under the influence of drugs.

For the other causes of injuries, make sure that you are not swimming in unfamiliar bodies of water all by yourself. Even the simple task of placing non-skid mats in your bathroom would help.

Finally, make sure that you have ample protection in your workplace, especially if you are doing manual labor or dealing with machinery.

4. Stroke

The precautions taken in preventing heart disease is the same thing that you should do to reduce the incidence of stroke.

Limiting your alcohol consumption, steering clear of cigarettes, having a proper diet, having your blood pressure regularly checked, maintaining a healthy weight and exercising – all of these preventive measures will lower the risks of having stroke.

5. Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases

According to the American Lung Association, more than 60,000 men died of chronic lower respiratory diseases in 2003.

Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are some health conditions which fall under the category of chronic lower respiratory diseases.

Although there are other risk factors, the main reason why men acquire this disease is smoking.

If you’re a smoker, you are 12 times more likely to die of chronic lower respiratory diseases as compared to a man who does not smoke at all.

Obviously, the preventive measure to take for this is to quit or completely avoid smoking. You should also avoid secondhand smoke and if you’re dealing with chemicals in the workplace, make sure that you have ample protection from inhaling the substances which could be toxic – if you cannot avoid being close to chemicals at all.

6. Diabetes

If you’re a bit thick in the middle, chances are more for you to be at risk of acquiring diabetes.

This is the sixth leading cause of death among American men, which could also be due to the fact that it’s quite easy to succumb to leading a sedentary lifestyle.

So how can this disease be prevented?

You do need to maintain a healthy weight, try to reduce the flab in your middle through diet and exercise, and if you already know that you are at risk due to a history of diabetes in the family, you should have your blood sugar checked regularly. [Controlling diabetes]

7. Influenza and Pneumonia

Influenza and pneumonia are both life-threatening diseases which are actually lung infections. They could both be a result of lung damage due to asthma or smoking.

Fortunately, there are ways to reduce your risks of getting influenza and pneumonia by having injections.

Yearly flu shots are 90% effective in preventing the disease, and vaccines for pneumonia infection reduce the risks of acquiring it by half.

8. Suicide

It may sound uncommon to you, especially if you have not had a close encounter with suicide or depression – but it is more common than you think.

In 2003, the CDC noted more than 25,000 men who committed suicide.

In addition, men are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than women.

The sad thing is that very few depression cases are being diagnosed because men are less likely to treat or even recognize the symptoms of the disease if it befell them.

What’s important is for men to realize that if they are feeling depressed or experiencing suicidal tendencies, they should immediately seek professional help.

9. Kidney Disease

You can have kidney disease if you overuse over-the-counter medications like aspirin and ibuprofen.

The content of these medications are toxic to your kidneys, so don’t make it a habit of popping an aspirin every time you feel a headache coming on.

Living a healthy lifestyle and only following the doctor’s orders when taking your medication are the preventive measures for kidney disease.

10. Alzheimer’s Disease

Finally, the number 10 killer of men in the US is Alzheimer’s disease.

This disease is prevalent to those who are 65 years and above – and 4.5 million men and women are affected by it.

As of now, there really is no specific measure that you can take to prevent Alzheimer’s disease – but improving your general health may help.

According to MayoClinic.com, the statistical average age that men in the US live is 74.8. If you would like to live well past this age, you should try leading a healthier lifestyle through diet and exercise, stop smoking or avoid it completely, make sure to take preventive measures against injuries and accidents – and get regular checkups with your doctor.

By doing so, you can live a longer, healthier life.

Before starting my article I will like to say a few words about health.

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”
“He, who has health, has hope. And he, who has hope, has everything.”
“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”

Men’s Health Problems

Hair loss, hair restoration and hair replacement is the second article in our series of common men’s health problems. If you missed the first article on erectile dysfunction you can access it by clicking on the link.

Our hair can start to recede at any age, mainly from the temples and the crown of the head.

For a small minority of men this can start in their teenage years, but for the majority of men hair loss is delayed until their late 20s and early 30s.

A small proportion of men don’t worry about hair loss; many others, however, become emotionally distressed by losing hair and suffer low self esteem, lose self confidence and even fall into depression.

Baldy Men

Women love baldy men, apparently it makes men look macho. Being a baldy myself this is a real bonus.

On a serious note premature hair loss is a big problem for men, especially younger men.

In this article we will explore the reasons behind losing your hair, over the counter hair replacement treatments and natural hair restoration remedies.

The first explanation I would like to offer is why hair thins or falls out as part of the natural human process.

Male baldness can be inherited, therefore if family members are bald then you are more susceptible to early hair loss. Hair loss can occur due to having too much of a chemical called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT.
Medical Causes of Hair Loss

All premature hair loss in men is not down to ageing or hereditary factors, there are a number of medical conditions that could be behind sudden hair loss such as:

* An Iron Deficiency
* Anemia
* Under Active Thyroid
* Scalp Infections
* Stress and Anxiety
* Reaction to prescription medication

If you have suffered sudden hair loss or are in any way worried about losing your hair; you should seek professional medical advice before the problem escalates.
Hair Restoration, Hair Replacement and Hair Transplant

There are many “apparently” successful surgical and non surgical procedures available to restore your hair.

Predominately these procedures are performed by private clinics; all who claim to be the answer to your hair loss prayers. I guess it is a matter of interpretation of what successful hair replacement means but anything that helps to restore your self esteem is fine by me.

I am sure there are some very happy customers out there and I would not attempt to besmirch anyone or any claims made but in my opinion the replacement results I have seen honestly look unatural at best and down right stupid at worst.

I certainly am not going to dismiss these procedures as I am not qualified, I am sure some will be very happy with the results and in the interest of fairness I have provided a video below that seems to be a successul outcome.

It’s only right that there should be a men’s health magazine. In the past, the real need for a male oriented publication on health has been eclipsed by the many other publications focusing on female concerns. It is pretty obvious though that men also have health issues that deserve to be addressed.

Your Magazine Need

There is no question that men and women just aren’t made from the same mold. This is not a sexist view it is a fact. Although women can now perform the same tasks, jobs and responsibilities as men, they difference between male and female health concerns differ. Issues ranging from hair loss to sexual dysfunction for example are experienced differently by men and women. Men may therefore not be able to benefit from generic pieces of health advice.

In other words, some pieces of health advice for women may not be applicable for men. It should go without saying that men truly need a resource of their own that can provide the right answers to unique male concerns.

What’s in a Magazine

There are a variety of publications that offer advice on male health. The most basic publications however simply focus on such topics as fitness training and nutrition. As most of us already know though, these are not the only components of a man. Like women, men are complex beings too. Striving to achieve total health takes more than just knowing the right diet and exercise regimen.

This is why men’s health magazine publications now know better than to take a simplified approach. Instead of just shelling out tips on exercises and diet components, they also need to provide data on such topics as make disease detection, mental health, sex and lifestyle types. Other magazines offer an even broader view through topics focusing on fashion and technology.

Picking Your Magazine

You don’t want to waste your money by skipping from one subscription to another. You would want to get the ideal magazine the first time. You can do this by narrowing down your preferred focus. Although magazines for men contain many different topics, most of them have theme focuses. Some obviously focus more on nutrition or some other male health concern or issue. Find a magazine that focuses on your main interests.

Actual readers would also know best which magazines are worth your money. Read a couple of reviews first before settling on a publication.

There is no doubt that you will benefit from a men’s health magazine. It can give you the right clues to making a healthy lifestyle possible for you.

You’re a savvy health conscious guy who believes in the importance of using mens health supplements to support your health, protect you from disease and allow you to be healthy when you’re older.

Mens health is a very important issue that needs more focus in the media and medical community. Although a lot of progress has occurred over the past twenty years there is still much to do. We need to distinguish real health issues from cosmetic needs and assumptions.

The first step is to know that you’re at risk, that way you know what to look for. From heart disease and stroke to cancer, some things are unavoidable no matter what you try to do to avoid them.

One of the most valuable resources a guy has today is online men health forums. now if you have a question about your health you don’t need to ask your doctor first. One of the drawbacks to use men health forums for information,is that you can never be absolutely sure if the information you’re getting is correct.

So the most obvious of mens health tips to apply is to simply eat more fruits and vegetables.
Especially since it all counts. Whether you eat it fresh, drink 100% juice, or whatever. Frozen, canned, dried or fresh. It’s all good and all good for you.

Another men health diet tip is to replace regular head lettuce salads with mixed spring greens or spinach. While head lettuce has almost no nutritional value, spinach and mixed greens are super foods that are packed with all the vitamins you could ever hope for in a tasty salad base.

Regular exercise is one of the requirements necessary to address men’s health and fitness issues. The types of exercises that will improve and strengthen the heart muscles are highly recommended.

Red meat is the “complete protein” and is good for you, fried food is very tasty, and the brain lives on sugar, so it’s not as if those things have to be done away with. But the key here is balance.Cut your french fry consumption in half, and replace them with beans or squash.

By taking both a fat and carb blocker you’re essentially interfering with two of the three most important macro-nutrients, protein being the third which basically defeats the object of eating.

There are so many options available to help boost and maintain men’s fitness that it is quite easy, with the right motivation and fitness program, for men to lose weight and get back into shape.

The most popular natural fat burner however currently receiving great “rep” on Men’s Health Forum this year is the anti-oxidant Acai Burn.

There are a number of male dietary supplements that can be beneficial to prostate health, either on their own or in combination with other nutrients. Saw palmetto, an herb native to the Atlantic seaboard, is one of the most popular and extensively researched mens health supplements.

Research has shown that men can help maintain prostate health by eating Brazil nuts, pomegranate juice, scallions, garlic, onions, and, of course, lycopene from tomatoes.

These days, it’s imperative that you stay on top and in charge of your health!

by Coventry City Council

Did you know that each hour in each civilised country, at least five men die from conditions that are potentially preventable? Or that men live on average six years less than women?

According to the Australian Medical Association, many men treat their health as a low priority while they juggle the competing demands of work and family life. Apparently, men often adopt a “functional view” of their bodies. Only when their work, play or exercise is below par, they understand there may be a problem. Another fact is that most men stop visiting doctors regularly between the age of 20 and 45. By the time the begin visiting GP’s again, their ailments are more chronic in nature!

Prevention and early detection are key! To prevent and mitigate risks of obesity, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc., there is a thing you can do: an annual men’s health check! This is the best advice I can give you, as it will most certainly help you to maintain and protect your own health.

According to my own Sydney based men’s health specialist Dr. Rob King, the main objectives of a men’s health check/assessment are:

To improve and maintain your wellbeing in the short and long term. To ensure you maintain your physical independence in the long term. To prevent the onset of disease, including cancer. To detect disease early, including cancer.

According to Dr. Rob King a complete men’s health check should cover the detection and prevention of:

Nutritional imbalances. Excess body weight. Disease of your heart and arteries (cardiovascular disease – build-up of plaque in your arteries). High blood pressure (hypertension). Abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia). Abnormal blood sugar (insulin resistance/pre-diabetes/diabetes). Prostate problems. Weak bones (osteoporosis), calcium and vitamin D deficiencies. Screening for cancer, in particular skin, testicles, prostate, bowel. Sexual difficulties, in particular erection and ejaculation problems (optional). Sexually transmitted infections (optional). Immunisations.

Most large medical centres offer health checks and there are specialized men’s health check centres in most large cities around the world. They’ll do a full health check and provide you with advise on how to improve your health. It will all be on a strictly confidential basis! A men’s health check will take you at least 1 to 2 hours and will cost approx. 0-0 of which you can claim a large part from your health insurance. A lot of employers do have agreements in place with external health and wellbeing providers, so just ask internally if your employer can arrange and fund your annual health check.

To find a men’s health check specialist near you, just Google “men’s health check” with your location to find a specialised centre near you.
Please do yourself a big favour and schedule a health check appointment on the short term. It is one of the best health investments you can make!

Make this a Positive & Fruitful Day….unless you have other plans!

Thanks, warm regards & success,

Concierge medicine has many stigma’s that have been following it since its inception out of Seattle in the 90’s, and many, if not all, of those stigma’s are nothing more than urban myths. With the death of Elizabeth Edwards, and the renewed focus in the media on women’s health issues, we wanted to take a look at how women’s health is an integral part of concierge medicine.

A new report that was released yesterday by the National Women’s Law Center has a lot of perplexed at the results. Women in the U.S. are binge drinking more often, getting less PAP smears, and are more obese and at risk for diabetes than ever before. The U.S. got an ‘unsatisfactory’ grade from the Law Center.

According to WebMD, several disturbing health trends have emerged over the last three years, including:

The percentage of women that reported one or more episodes of binge drinking within a month of being questioned increased to 10.6% from 7.3% in 2007. Binge drinking was defined as having five or more drinks on a single occasion.
The percentage of women that reported getting annual Pap smears declined from 86% to 78% during the same period.
The percentage of women that tested positive for the sexually transmitted infection chlamydia increased from 6.3% to 7.4%.

Compared to three years ago, a higher percentage of women in the U.S. are also obese and have high blood pressure and/or diabetes.

In 2010, 26.4% of women were obese, compared to 24% in 2007. Both figures fall far short of the goal of a 15% obesity rate by 2010 set by government health officials at the beginning of the decade.

An even more disturbing trend regarding women’s health is that 12% of Americans live in areas that are considered medically underserved, with Louisiana at the top of that list.

So what is this saying about our health care system and its ability to serve women’s needs? It’s not saying much, and what it is saying it not good at all. In many cases, the woman of the household is the caretaker, and when she gets sick the entire family dynamic changes leaving others in the family vulnerable to sickness as well.

What is interesting about this report is that as this report emerged, there was another report from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that appeared in the journal Health Affairs that showed as women age, they spend more on health services. According to ModernHelathCare.com, among the elderly, women accounted for 61% of all healthcare spending, and women’s out-of-pocket per-capita costs were 50% higher than that of elderly men. Elderly women also spent more on prescription drugs: ,703 per capita for women compared to ,364 per capita for elderly men. The authors attributed greater healthcare spending by elderly women to their longer life expectancy.

Where does this all leave concierge medicine? It’s common knowledge that a mother will tend to her family and children before herself, and if a fever hits or symptoms occur during after-hours, or if appointments interfere with daily life and hectic schedules, women will avoid rocking the boat and will disregard crucial health care issues. Concierge medicine offers women the opportunity to continue with their hectic schedules and meet with their doctor when they have time, not when their doctor has time. It’s a health care alternative that meets the needs of the patients first, no matter what time of day or night, and this system appeals to mothers and busy heads of households.

The subject of women’s health encompasses a range of issues that can be treated by physiotherapy. From pregnancy back pain to incontinence problems faced by older women, physiotherapy is there to help.

Bladder incontinence is a problem for 13 million Americans on any given day. Although some men have this problem, it is present in much greater numbers in the area of women’s health.

There are several different kinds of incontinence. Stress incontinence happens when the person coughs or sneezes and urge incontinence means the person has sudden urges to use the restroom, for example. Organ prolapse, such as a tilted uterus, can lead to incontinence, as well as sexual dysfunction. This is another area of women’s health physiotherapy can help.

Physiotherapists who work in the field of women’s health can correct nearly 70% of incontinence problems. The major exercise used is the Kegel. It is a very specialized exercise, and at least half the people who try to do it on their own fail miserably. It takes biofeedback for many to get it right.

Many of the problems of women’s health can be traced to the pelvic floor. The Kegel is the exercise that addresses this part of the anatomy. However, other therapies are used as well. Electrical stimulation is only one of the methods used. Soft tissue manipulation is another treatment that has been tried.

Pelvic pain affects many women’s health. It may come from a variety of sources. It can be due to vulvodynia or abdominal surgeries, for example. One can have pelvic pain after falling, especially if one lands on the tailbone. These conditions often curtail sexual activities and lead to an overall deterioration in women’s psychological health. Physiotherapy offers many treatments to help these problems.

No discussion of how physiotherapy helps with women’s health would be complete without a word about pregnancy. Women who are pregnant know that their bodies go through various changes that can be painful. Low back pain is only one of them.

Physiotherapists can help with this. Gentle exercises can be taught to relieve tension in the back. One is to lie on the floor with the knees up and press the small of the back to the floor. This gives a great feeling of relief. Other exercises strengthen the woman’s back, but few people besides physiotherapists know how far to go with exercising when pregnant. Women’s health is important at this time, and so is the baby’s.

Physiotherapists can also give instructions on what amount of exercise is best for pregnant women. After delivery, physiotherapy is a boon to women’s health. It can help get women back into shape and instruct them in taking care of their new child while preventing back problems. Another area of postpartum women’s health is the treatment of women who have had cesarean sections.

Physiotherapy can help women’s health because there are so many conditions that women suffer. Many of these conditions will respond to physiotherapy. It is only natural that women would turn to a tried and true method for relief.

When the topic of women’s health care is raised, the first disease that comes to mind is probably breast cancer. But surprisingly, that’s not the number one health care issue confronting women today. In fact, heart disease kills more women each year than all forms of cancer combined. By knowing the most significant risks in women’s health care and what you can do to combat these health care issues, women of all ages can take a proactive approach to leading healthier lives.

The #1 Women’s Health Care Issue: Heart Disease More than 489,000 American women lose their lives each year as a result of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular diseases. In fact, more women than men die from heart disease each year. Until recently, little research focused on women and heart disease, but the good news is that’s no longer the case. From research into the effects of hormone replacement therapy on heart health to studies of how cholesterol-lowering medications work in women, there’s an unprecedented increase in the amount of information available to women working to live with and ward off heart disease.

Experts at the Mayo Clinic offer simple common sense advice to women (and men) in the fight against heart disease: don’t smoke, eat a diet low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, exercise at least 30 to 60 minutes a week, and maintain a healthy weight.

In addition, they encourage women to see their family doctor each year for a physical which includes blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Studies indicate that there is a 46% increase in stroke risk for women for each 7.5 mm HG increase in their diastolic blood pressure, so monitoring blood pressure and controlling hypertension are vital.

Women who suffer migraines, are pregnant, have atrial fibrillation and those with the auto-immune disease Lupus also appear to run a greater stroke risk. Diabetes is another women’s health care issue with a direct impact on heart health. The American Heart Association notes women with diabetes have a two to six times greater risk of heart disease and heart attack and are at a significantly greater risk of suffering a stroke. All of these risk factors make an annual visit with your doctor one of the best ways women can manage and improve the health of their hearts.

Cancer Concerns: The Second Deadliest Health Care Issue Women Face While breast cancer is often at the top of the list of health care issues for women, several other types of cancers also pose a significant threat to women’s health. In this country, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime according to current data which means that a little more than 2 million women are currently living with breast cancer in the U.S. But melanoma, a form of skin cancer, actually kills more young women than any other cancer according to statistics provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation. In fact, melanoma is the most common form of cancer in women between the ages of 25 and 29 and its incidence has tripled in women under 40 in the last thirty years.

Ovarian cancer is another women’s health care concern. Usually symptomless until it is widespread, this disease is the fourth most frequent cause of death for American women. The American Cancer Society estimates 26,000 new cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed each year. Unfortunately, there are few definitive screening tests that detect this disease, but experts advise a thorough annual gynecological exam and for women to be alert to pelvic pain and pressure, low back discomfort, mild nausea, and an increase in constipation or gas. A serum CA-125 blood test can detect certain forms of ovarian cancer, but the test is not accurate enough to be used as a routine screening tool.

The rate of women suffering from cervical cancer has dropped a great deal over the years, thanks in part to the increase in the number of women who get an annual Pap smear which can indicate the presence of abnormal cells on the cervix. It’s a strong argument for making sure you never skip your Pap smear. Women who have had Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs), herpes simplex virus, those with suppressed immune systems, and those who have had multiple sexual partners run a greater risk of cervical cancer. On the prevention front, a recent trial of a vaccine against cervical cancer was 100% effective in the short term at blocking the disease.

Psychological Well-being: A Growing Health Care Issue for Women In the field of women’s health care, psychological problems, which include eating disorders, depression, and anxiety disorders, affect millions of American women. From coping skills to medications to alternative and complementary medical approaches, there is a growing body of knowledge being brought to bear on this important health care issue.

More than 19 million people in the United States, the greatest percentage being women, live with anxiety disorders that disrupt their lives. The different types of disorders within this group include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and phobias. Treatment options include talk therapy and a wide range of medications that can quell the symptoms of the condition. Many women also combine alternative approaches to treatment such as acupuncture, meditation, and diet modification with traditional forms of treatment.

According to the American Psychological Association, women are almost twice as likely to suffer from major depression as men. In fact, some experts in the field have called depression the most significant mental health risk for women, especially those in their childbearing and rearing years. Studies have found that married women and mothers are especially vulnerable to depression. It’s important for a woman who feels she may be suffering from depression to be carefully evaluated by a physician because the source of the depressive symptoms could be birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, or thyroid disease. Treatment for depression, like most other psychological conditions, includes talk therapy and medications. Some women also find relief in alternative medicine with herbal supplements, meditation, and other complementary techniques.

Though many of the women who struggle with eating disorders are in their teens and twenties, these conditions also affect women at other stages in their lives. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating are the most well-known forms of eating disorders. Statistics show that one out of every one hundred girls between the ages of 10 and 20 is anorexic, 4% of college-aged women are bulimic, and 1% of women are binge eaters. The root causes of these diseases include stress at home and at school or work, depression and anxiety, major life changes like a divorce or death, and physical and sexual abuse. Breaking out of the cycle of eating disorders requires a combined approach to this health care issue including psychological treatment, nutrition counseling, and in some cases, hospitalization.

A Holistic Approach to Women’s Health Care As women become more proactive about their health, many seek a holistic approach to improving their well-being and fighting disease. But coordinating information among several health care providers, keeping on top of the latest breakthroughs in health, and finding the United States’ best doctors is a daunting task for any women.

Some are turning to private professional health care advocates, like those available at PinnacleCare, to help them achieve their goal of a whole-woman centered approach to health care issues. From compiling and electronically storing comprehensive medical records to researching treatment options and providing accelerated access to the United States’ top doctors, PinnacleCare’s health advocates make a holistic approach to health care possible.

“I passionately believe that what our PinnacleCare Members experience is the way healthcare ought to be delivered,” explains John Hutchins, PinnacleCare’s Managing Director. “The healthcare system has gotten so complex that most people are at a loss to find their way through it without professional guidance and objective counsel.”
